An algorithm for determining the characteristics of the dynamic positioning system of oil and gas platform supply vessels (PSV) and vessels similar to them in architectural, structural and hydrodynamic types AHTS, DSV, OSV) is presented. The substantiation of the characteristics of the dynamic positioning system is considered from the point of view of general ship design and consists in determining the required thrust of the propellers that ensure the retention of the vessel in a given position. The required thrust and the energy required for its creation are determined based on the definition of the values of external forces acting on the maintaining vessel, the physical nature of which is due to the efforts from the effects of wind, waves and currents. The key concept of the described method for determining the required characteristics of the system is the static balance of forces acting on the positioned vessel. With this approach, external forces are assumed to be constant in time and dependent on wind speed. Based on the use of simplified dependencies and dimensionless coefficients obtained from the model tests of similar vessels, several ways are proposed to determine the external forces acting on the vessel. The method of verification calculation of the fact of positioning of the vessel is proposed.
