In the 21st century, global warming is an environmental problem, as climate change entails temperature anomalies, melting glaciers, and rising sea levels. In 2020, the Russian Federation ratified the Kinali Amendment of the Montreal Protocol. It talks about phasing out consumption of 18 hydrof luorocarbons (HFCs), which are synthetic greenhouse gases with a high global warming potential. Marine refrigeration equipment uses synthetic hydrocarbons. When switching to natural refrigerants, there may be difficulties in refueling existing equipment, shortages and interruptions in their supplies, if HFC consumption is not limited in a timely manner.Natural refrigerants are represented by carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrocarbons. In terms of environmental impact, such refrigerants do not pose a threat to the ozone layer and the Earth’s climate. For use in marine refrigeration equipment, refrigerants must not be limited to the requirements of national environmental legislation alone, but must also meet international standards.
Keywords: refrigerant, refrigeration unit, ozone depletion potential, global warming, energy efficiency, toxicity, heat transfer, condenser.
